The Lost Wines of Axarquia
Be the first to discover ancient local wines, hear the history of viniculture in the region from experts, taste the little-known sensation of local Moorish and Spanish wines.
Vines have grown on these steep slopes of Axarquía above the Mediterranean for nearly three thousand years. Phoenicians, Romans and the Muslim gardeners of al-Andalus each left their mark, and a handful of grapes survived that grow almost nowhere else, like the native Romé, Doradilla and the ancient Moscatel of Alexandria.
Today a small generation of winemakers is reviving them, proving that the Axarquía is far more than sweet muscatel. Expect crisp dry whites, sparkling tartness, mountain reds and the rich wines made from sun-dried grapes, a technique inherited from al-Andalus. you'll taste wines from local family wineries, hear the stories behind each one, and discover how they pair with dishes from our kitchen.
